When It Comes to Men’s Clothing, This Is What You Need to Know
For many men, getting dressed is about speed and looking good. But choosing and putting together men’s clothing into a great looking finished product is not always as easy as it seems. Some men are very much aware of what is fashionable and what looks good together. For those that need a bit of help, these tips can make it far easier for you to manage the process of getting dressed in the morning.
Often the focal point of your look, your shirt needs to be properly fitted to your body. Aim to have the seam of your shoulder on your shoulder bone. The collar should not constrict the neck. And, you should have cuffs that end where your palm begins. Choose a length that allows you to move easily including bending and twisting without moving up more than an inch.
It’s best to invest in a suit tailored to your body. Again, it should not constrict at the neck, should allow about 2 cm of your shirt collar to show, and should have seams along your shoulder bone. In addition to this, choose one that is long enough to allow the second button from the bottom to rest just about your belly. Place your arms at your side. Your jacket sleeves should cover your wrist but not extend over the hang. It should be loose enough to allow you to easily move.
Dress trousers for men should drape a bit, but should not have pleats. They should have “breaks” or areas where the pant leg is loose fitting and bunched. When choosing jeans, choose a slim fit in the thigh but aim for a tapered or straight leg below the knee for the most proper fit. A great way to get the right fit is to choose the right size for your waist, but then to choose one half size smaller to avoid a bulky leg.
The very bottom of your tie, when around your neck, should reach to the center of your belt. When tying it, don’t tighten the collar too much to constrain it. Rather, the tie should sit just under your collar. Ties can, and should be statement pieces. Make them fit your personality, the theme of the look, or any color scheme you feel is right for the event. This is one area you can get creative to show off your personality.
Men’s Coats and Outerwear
When selecting a coat to wear, again, ensure the seam hits the shoulder bone. The sleeves should pass your wrist about an inch. Whatever you are wearing under your jacket should not be visible at the sleeve. The bottom of the jacket should not flare out – if it does, you have the wrong fit. And, you don’t want a jacket that is too loose or too tight. Rather, it should lie on your body comfortably allowing you to move easily.
