All of us natural born explorers, travelers, hikers and all-around outdoorsy people know exactly how important it is to have a backpack which not only provides the right amount of space but secures a great fit as well. However, I think that body frame diversity is often overlooked when backpacks are being designed and that oversight often causes unpleasant and painful experiences to many backpackers. Therefore, when I first tried on the Osprey Packs Fairview 70, I felt as though it was an extension of myself, not just a bulky nuisance on my back.
Is This The Right Backpack For Me?
My answer will always be – It depends. If you are looking for a backpack that is light, comfortable and conforms to your figure easily, it might as well be. Unlike a lot of different products out there, the Fairview 70 allows you to perfectly balance the weight distribution by utilizing many of its straps. For me, that is the most important thing. When I’m hiking, I hate having to endure back pain due to not being able to adjust the fit and the weight distribution accordingly.
It is important to mention that your height should play a major role in deciding on the perfect backpack. If you are under 6 feet (as I am), a 70-liter robust backpack will rarely provide you with the comfort level you are looking for. Osprey Men’s Atmos 65 AG Backpack can also be a good alternative.
However, when it comes to purchasing the right backpack for you, it all boils down to your personal preferences and needs. My suggestion would be to make a short list of answers to these three particular questions whilst being completely honest with yourself!
- Am I a weekend traveler or a backpacker?
- How heavy of a packer am I?
- What is my stature?

Let’s Get Specific
If you are reading this article, there is a great chance that you either already own a backpack or you are in search of one. Therefore, at one point in time, you must have stumbled upon the Osprey Farpoint, one of the most popular backpacks on the market! Now, the Fairview series contains all the benefits of Farpoint backpacks like comfort, lightness, ruggedness, spaciousness, and durability, but it’s made to fit narrower body frames!
[amazon link=”B06WVC8T6F” title=”Osprey Fairview 70″ /], in particular, is the largest model of the series. It includes a 57 L main backpack and a 13 L detachable daypack. If you are a serious backpacker like me, having 70 L at your disposal, plus being able to divide it in two for short hikes, comes as a true blessing from the skies! However, if you are more of a weekend traveler, settling for a smaller backpack would be the right way to go.
If you are a person of smaller stature, being able to distribute the weight in the right places is of immense significance. [amazon link=”B06WVC8T6F” title=”Osprey Fairview 70″ /] allows that. Not only does is it increase the level of comfort, but it reduces the possibility of the straps cutting into your shoulders (let’s not forget that the straps are beautifully padded).
For the sake of clarity, let’s make a list of the most prominent pros and cons of the Osprey Packs Fairview 70.
- Just enough room for everything!
- Weighs in at 3.88 lbs (1.76 kg)
- Padded in all the right places
- Easily adjustable weight distribution
Let’s Get Even More Specific
(Let’s not overlook the looks)
As we have mentioned before, the Fairview 70 only comes in two colors – Misty Gray and Rainforest Green. Now, if you are someone who does not like inconspicuous colors, these will most probably turn you down. Also, while we are commenting on the overall looks, keep in mind that the backpack will look much prettier when its full. For some reason, when it’s empty, it tends to look a little bit saggy.
This backpack is made from 210D Nylon Mini Hex Diamond Ripstop, because the one thing a backpackers rucksack has to be, is durable. This material helps prevent potential rips and tears from additionally expanding, but it also needs to be rugged in order to sustain our often immensely heavy loads. Even though Osprey made this backpack from an ultra strong material, they have still managed to keep it incredibly light!
Let me put this as bluntly as I possibly can. I am sick and tired of backpacks with top or top and bottom pack access. Every single time when I’m in need of some piece of clothing or equipment I have to empty almost half of my backpack in order to get to them. When you have a decent zipper which allows you to open up the whole backpack as if it was a suitcase, life on the road becomes much easier! The Fairview 70 has a great zipper, plus, you get a padlock which you can use on the zippers in order to secure your belongings.
THE BACK SYSTEM
I have already touched upon the importance of having an ergonomically designed backpack. Fortunately, the Fairview 70’s ventilated back panel, harness, straps, hipbelt are all ergonomically designed. All of you backpackers out there can surely attest to the world of difference these features make. Most importantly, they are designed to fit almost any person’s anatomy! The backpack’s weight can be evenly distributed so that no part of your body gets more strained than the other.
For me personally, 57 L is just the right amount of space. All of my garments and equipment fit fairly easily and more importantly, I have a sense that they are safe. Internal compression straps help keep them tucked away whilst providing that extra inch of space that you always end up needing. Let’s not forget that you also get a decently sized mesh pocket which is perfect for storing away your dirty laundry or even your beach sandals.
Spoiler alert! There are a lot of tiny features that you are yet to discover about the Fairview 70. I didn’t want to divulge all of its little secrets because the element of surprise makes the exploration process that much more fun!
Moving on to the 13 L detachable daypack. Even though I mostly use it for shorter hiking routes, this convenient little feature is, in fact, great for carrying your valuables in. I am talking passports, money, mobile phones, etc. The reason why it’s so convenient is that you can clip it onto the harness and basically wear it on your chest. Long live marsupials! Don’t judge me. I care about safety! However, that is not it. On the front of the daypack, you will be able to find two extremely convenient mesh pockets. If you are a hiker, you understand the importance of hydration, and these mesh pockets will allow you to easily store not only one but two water bottles in them!
Is It Just Me?
After spending a couple of hours on the internet, I was pleasantly surprised to find that a lot of people were willing to share their experiences with the Osprey Packs Fairview 70. Best of all, most of those experiences were positive. Therefore, instead of relying on my experience alone, let’s allow other people to contribute to this review as well.
