When you hear of Oakley Kitchen Sink Backpack, like me, you might wonder when did Oakley start designing backpacks. Or what’s up with the weird name? The Oakley Kitchen Sink is the modern day industrialized backpack for your one to a couple of day’s visit.
I am sure you can relate to this, when traveling to visit friends or family you may not want to leave your shoes, and dirty, wet clothes at their place. Another issue is your laptop, you need to have it when you visit among other basic and extra items. In turn, you will need a bag that can accommodate all your belongings comfortably for your journey and I find Oakley Kitchen Sink Backpack to be just the right pack.
However, for you to agree with me, the following should be what you are a looking for:
- A solid backpack to carry basic but essential items for a few days (items from laptop, clothing, documents and even shoes)
- An industrialized and tough look or style
- A mid-priced backpack
What I have just stated are mainly shallow requirements and the Oakley Kitchen Sink Backpack has more details to offer. The pack is 20 H x 14 W x 8 D inches in dimensions , therefore, has a heavy duty appeal. It has a padded panel for laptop storage of up to 17 inches, two sided water bottle pockets and more specialized pockets to fit your items separately.
It is made of hand washable material that is light. However, the zippers are of heavy metals and in addition to claps (also metallic), add substantial weight to the pack. The main compartment has two-level access one, is the flap that covers the front top side which gives access to two, the zipper to now the zipper access. So far, the Oakley Kitchen Sink is available in three colors; black, grey or red colors which you can pick from.
- High security from the two stages to access the main compartment
- Convenient weight straps for comfort
- Roomy main compartment to facilitate numerous items
- It is not an everyday backpack due to the strain in constant retrieval of items in your pack
- Be careful when storing the bag as the metal claps can ruin the painting of your car or storage area
- Due to the metal zippers and claps, the bag heavy
- In general, I find the backpack most suitable for traveling either outside the country or in the neighboring state and even for hill-walks. It is spacious enough to facilitate a tourist’s essentials for a weekend away essentials. Nevertheless, don’t get confused, it is neither a day-to-day pack or for hiking also.
Oakley Kitchen Sink Backpack Features and Benefits
The main compartment of the Oakley Kitchen Sink is spacious; it has a capacity of 35 liters. To start with, it has a slot for a laptop of up to 17 inches. To keep your laptop steady, the pack comes with a pouch that has been adequately padded and the slot has an elastic pull tag that allows you to adjust its size. The pouch also acts as a shock absorber for your electronics. To access, your laptop or tab in the main compartment, you don’t have to hassle opening the whole pack, there is a pull-down zipper at the back that allows direct access to the laptop slot. In addition to the main compartment are additional pockets, my favorite being the ones at the each of the shoulder straps. You can store your snacks, phone, or cards in these pockets for easy access plus, they are elasticated to keep your items intact. On the mold flip, there is a pocket for delicate items such as sunglasses. The mold may not be as hard as plastic but it is not easily decompressed and the pocket is accessed through a zipper. Inside, it is lined with soft fleece and since you can also put your phone or MP3 player in it, there is a rubber port that allows for threading your earphone cables and listen to music while walking.
Like I said before there is also a slot for you to carry your wet cloth let us say swimming costume or dirty shoes. Oakley Kitchen Sink has an allowance at the bottom of the backpack; it is a waterproof area for you to store soiled or wet items that you would not want to contaminate the other items. The slot has two popper places that are for ensuring the stored items remain in place. At the bottom of this slot, are two drainage holes that pass water or dirt from the items stored.
Before we go to the next feature, there are two side pockets where you can store your water bottle. However, unlike most pack’s side pockets which are usually mesh, the Oakley Kitchen Sink pockets have zippers and compression straps. Meaning, you can use them as external pouches for easy access to certain items since the pockets are secure and stable. The pack offers more pockets allowing you to organize your items in different areas and ensure nothing gets crumpled or damaged.
The Oakley Kitchen Sink design has made sure there is enough airflow at the back and at its shoulder straps by constructing them with high density foam. Therefore, if your anxiety kicks in while traveling, Kitchen sink tries to reduce the excessive sweating. In addition, the foam is a shock absorber therefore, protects the items inside the pack from getting damages as well as your back from the items digging you from behind. On the other hand, the straps are made with a mesh-like material on top of the foam and cohesively protect your shoulders from being cut by the weight of the load. The straps are also adjustable making the pack suitable for a variety of people in terms of size.
Obviously, the pack has waist straps which add stability by bringing the weight of the back closer to the mid-body. Unexpectedly, the straps are fastened with a metal buckle fastening them using a Velcro. This is advantageous when you consider the case of damage; it will easily be mended with a couple of sewing skills. However, for such a heavy duty pack, it would have been more convenient if a stronger fastener used.
Unlike most backpacks where access to the main compartment is only through a zipper, the Oakley Kitchen Sink Backpack has two level of access. First, there is a mold flap (a semi-hard material) covering the top front of the backpack and is enforced by joining its clasps with two others at the middle of the bag. Once you untie the claps and lift the mold flap up, there is the second access to the main compartment. It is a strong metal zipper.
Therefore, it is impossible for someone to access the main compartment without your knowledge as you will feel them untying the clasps before reaching the zipper. Additionally, if you think a thief can open the pack to get to your laptop or tablet then that would be very difficult since the laptop slot is closest to your back. However due to the many techniques involved in accessing the main compartment, I found it tiresome when you want to access an item let us say at the bottom.

Material and design
The Oakley Kitchen Sink may not be waterproof but it is water resistant. It is made up of 69% Nylon and 31% Polyester material meaning it is not built to withstand heavy downpour but it reduces the chances of water penetrating. This is all thanks to its design as the pack has minimal flat surface that the water can sit long enough to sip in (under light rain). Otherwise, if you desperately need to stay safe from rain, then purchasing a waterproof rucksack liner would be advisable and you can carry it around just in case it pours.
The combination of nylon and polyester materials results in a strong and durable fabric that the pack features. The pack can withstand friction therefore; provide you with its service for a long time.
As you might have noticed the Oakley Kitchen Sink has a lot of metals which might spoil your laundry machine if you machine-wash it. The options are removing the metals before machine washing the backpack or hand washing it.
