His Earnings Allowed His Dad to Retire
One of the things that his fans love about him the most has nothing to do with a roundhouse kick. His fans love him for his character and the fact that he is a real person, just like them. In a world f working class people who are doing everything they can to try to make ends meet, it is refreshing for them to see a fighter who was on welfare and fought his way out of poverty.
Even more than that however, the admire McGregor because of the choices he has made since he started making big money. He didn’t cut a record or release a designer clothing line. He didn’t get a shoe named after him or open a chain of restaurants. He didn’t buy 17 sports cars and name them after ex-girlfriends.
What he did do, was take care of his parents. McGregor gave his parents enough money so that his father could stop working 50 hours a week. He gave them enough money that his father could retire, once and for all. It was an unselfish gesture, with no hidden agenda and no public relations motive. It was pretty darn cool too.
