He is the First Irish Fighter to Win a Match in the UFC
For some reason, a career in the UFC fighting for your life hasn’t held a great appeal for people who hail from Ireland. There have been a few over the years who have given it a try, but they haven’t lasted long. Tom Egan was the first man of Irish descent to step into the ring, but he lost at UFC 93.
As far as success goes however, Conor McGregor is the first Irishman to compete in a UFC event and come away with the coveted “W.” Naturally, the top executive at the UFC would like to build on McGregor’s following in his home country. Not only are they looking for new fans from Ireland, but they are also hoping for some new, upcoming talent out of there.
In the short time that McGregor has been competing, new recruits have already started filing in. New upstarts like Paul Redmond have decided to dedicate themselves to the ultimate fighting experience. There is also a fighter on the rise, as Cathal Pendred has begun to make some noise.
